That picture of Jaya and I is from 2015. It was our very first photo shoot together for our upcoming Kickstarter. We knew that we had an amazing idea. We knew that we wanted to change the landscape of the apparel industry. We had no idea how far this journey would take us. Jaya has become one of my best friends and one of the people that I trust most in this world. You really can't ask for a better business partner. Our strengths and weakness compliment each other. We've had plenty of setbacks along the way, but we've always stayed positive, made each other laugh, and kept focused on our very ambitious goal of changing the world!
We have done things a little bit differently than other companies. On this Small Business Saturday, we would like to take a moment to share a few things about our small business that we think are really special.
People come in many different beautiful shapes and sizes. Our imperfections are what make us even more gorgeous. When you buy our clothes, we want you to see models that look like you. We don't want you to look at our website and see models that resemble CGI characters more than they do actual women. When we have photo shoots, we find friends who we think will bring our fun products to life. Many of the models are in the STEAM field of the product they are modeling!
We want little kids (girls, especially) to look at our website and see real people represented there. We started this company because we didn't like the messaging in kids' clothes. We want to make sure we carry our empowering message to all facets of our company.
Up until just a few months ago we were shipping all of the orders out of my house in Reston, VA. Slowly but surely, my house began getting taken over by Svaha. It started in my office, then it moved to my upstairs, then it took over my dining room, then it took over my entire basement, then it took over my entire garage. Then, we finally realized that unless we wanted to fill my bedrooms also, we were going to have to find a new place to reside our business. My kids used to love helping with the shipments and playing with all the boxes, so it was pretty fun while it lasted!
We have now relocated to a nice big space in Chantilly, VA. We have lots of room for all of our products. We're very happy there. My kids have their basement playrooms back, so they are happy too. We are proud to keep our order fulfillment in-house. That way we can take better care of every customer and pack your orders with love.
We are deeply committed to practices that promote environmental sustainability. We manufacture and ship our products in a way that minimizes our environmental impact.
Though synthetic materials are really comfy (Hail to the yoga pants!), research is showing that the tiny microfibers in them wash away in the laundry, gather in waterways, and hurt ecosystems. Our clothes are made from 100% organic cotton and plant-based dyes. Our manufacturing is done in a way to minimize waste and adhere to high-quality standards.
Our products are shipped out in recycled, biodegradable packaging. Our business practices are aimed at using the smallest amount of packing possible so we can get awesome products to your door without hurting Mother Earth in the process.
We sincerely believe in using our brand and our voice to give back. We have an initiative called Dress for a Cause where we use our unique product line to raise money for organizations that are doing great things. The initiative started with a very successful fundraiser for the March for Science. After that we starting making specific products in order to raise money for various causes.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Jaya's son was diagnosed with leukemia over the summer. Since then, much of our effort has gone to raising money for
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital so we can do our part to try to end this terrible disease.
We can not stress this enough - our customers are the best customers in the history of good customers. You all openly communicate with us to offer suggestions, product ideas, and words of encouragement. You write to let us know how much our brand means to you. You write to tell us funny stories or jokes. You reach out to ask how you can spread the word about our company to more people. Many of you let us pick your brains to make sure our designs are scientifically accurate. You lift us up when we're feeling down. When Jaya's son was diagnosed with cancer, we were flooded with support and condolenscenes. Many of you have become our friends. We cannot thank you enough for being a part of our amazing journey.
Thank you for helping us reach our 3rd Small Business Saturday! We hope to continue to be around for a long time to provide you with fun clothes that smash gender barriers. Heck! We hope to be around for so long that gender barriers don't even exist anymore! You have a lot of options to chose from, so we are honored to have you all as a part of our family! #shopsmall
